Did you know that IQ is responsible for only about 6% of your workplace success? It gets you in the door of an industry, but once inside, most people have about the same IQ as you. The differentiators of the most successful employees include emotional intelligence, motivation, ambition and attitude. These, along with high aptitude in their chosen field, are the things that make Shortcuts.

The bulk of your morals, values, ethics and beliefs that drive your behavior are set by the time you’re 12 years old. After that, you must be deliberate about adding to or changing them. One half of a trillion unused neural connections die off after being unused in our brains by age 12. If you understand your strengths, evident since you were an adolescent, your chance of reaching mastery as a Shortcut increases significantly.

Shortcuts manage context. They understand that different people can think differently about the same thing, so they adjust their approach accordingly. Did you know that the brain learns better with CONTEXT than with CONTENT? The brain forms pictures as it learns and the linkage of those pictures to concepts is how it stores information most readily. When you hear the word “Paris” your brain will usually not see P-A-R-I-S, but rather a picture associated with the city like the Eiffel Tower, wine, love, food, fashion and so on.

High IQ doesn’t predict your overall success – it’s something else…

IQ is not the predictor of overall success we once thought it was. EQ, or your emotional quotient is more predictive because it tells us how you’ll get along while facing day-to-day adversity. IQ measures your cognitive abilities. It is predictive of your achievement in educational endeavors and measures your overall intellectual abilities.

The average IQ is between 90-110, as measured on most standardized IQ tests. The highest measured IQ today belongs to Mislav Predavec of Croatia. He’s an elite member of the Nano Society. Nano is like it’s sister IQ organization, MENSA, but membership into the Nano Society requires an IQ greater than 190. MENSA’s requirement is an IQ greater than 132. Two percent of the population is believed to be at that rarefied level. Predavec is the only member of the Nano Society. The chance of an IQ being 190 or above is one in 1,000,000,000. If you believe you should belong, you may email ivan.ivec@gmail.com. It’s lonely at the top.

Perspective gives you genius.
There is no one path to mastery or genius, and yet the journey toward mastery is what all Shortcuts have in common. Rivals Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were contemporaries, and each was, and continues to be, considered the true “Renaissance Man”. Both had varied artistic and engineering capabilities that are hailed as mastery even 700 years later, yet each had a different approach.

Da Vinci believed that nature was to be exulted and he worked in concert with it to develop his famous canals of Venice, the drawings of the anatomy and the first helicopter. Michelangelo’s mastery was informed by his belief that nature was the enemy and was to be conquered. He believed that every piece of stone had a figure inside, and that the duty of the artist was to release what nature was hiding by chipping away all the stone that was not the intended figure.

Where common sense comes from…
Common sense is highly valued in our society, and something that Shortcuts use when they don’t know the textbook answer. The term common sense comes from the “sense of the commons”, or more precisely the sense of the majority. The famous Nordstrom department store became legendary for its use and value of common sense.

Its first rule book contained only the following: “Welcome to Nordstrom. We’re glad to have you with our Company. Our number one goal is to provide outstanding customer service. Set both your personal and professional goals high. We have great confidence in your ability to achieve them.

Nordstrom Rules: Rule #1: Use good judgment in all situations. There will be no additional rules. Please feel free to ask your department manager, store manager, or division general manager any question at any time.”

True motivation is a double-sided coin.

Did you know that the things that demotivate you are not the same as things that do motivate you? Organizational psychologist, Frederick Herzberg called it “Hygiene Theory” because, like hygiene, the presence of certain things doesn’t make you healthier, but their absence can lead to deterioration. Compensation is one thing that shows up on the list of items that demotivate individuals if it is not at least on par with others in their field. When salary was appropriate, Herzberg’s research proved that it didn’t appear on the list of items that an individual considered motivating. Shortcuts are more focused on the list of things that motivate them than the list that demotivates them.
